Coimbatore, Jan 14 : The sheer distance from Assam to Tamil Nadu has not deterred it from approaching the Tamil Nadu Government in identifying companies that would be willing to impart training to unemployed youths from that State to start industrial units in Assam.
Over 20 members of the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers' Association (Siema), Coimbatore, have expressed their willingness to provide training, including ITI qualified, diploma engineers and engineering graduates, some of whom may even find jobs here after training, according to Mr Jayakumar Ramdass, President, Siema.
He told Business Line that the Assam Government has decided to approach other States, including Tamil Nadu, for providing training to qualified unemployed youths from that State under the “Chief Minister's Self Employment Scheme” (under the Assam Bikash Yojana).
The Government has planned to send the youth as apprentices for six months training to other industrially developed States for which the Assam Government would provide a stipend of Rs 4,500 a month to each trainee.
The Director of Industries and Commerce of the Tamil Nadu Government has asked the District Industries Centres (DICs) of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Coimbatore, Madurai, Karur, Erode and Virudhunagar districts to identify manufacturing units that were ready to offer training.
Mr Ramdass said the request has drawn an enthusiastic response from about 20 members of Siema.
The Siema President said the members' response for the ITI qualified personnel reflected the acute shortage in the availability of ITI trained people in Coimbatore. Companies in foundry, pumps, textile and auto component manufacturing sectors were in dire need of ITI qualified people for jobs such as electricians, fitters and so on.
He said another reason for the good response from the industrial units for training people from Assam was that ‘work-wise, people from the Northeast are very good.' If the companies found the trainees suitable and if those trained were willing, they could even settle down in jobs in Coimbatore itself.
