Assam Scribes Condemn Barua’s Threat

By Samudra Gupta Kashyap

Guwahati, Jan 11 : Condemning ULFA Commander-in-Chief Paresh Barua's threats against intellectuals who criticize or oppose the outfit's activities, Journalists' Forum of Assam has said his "comments on democratic thinking and activities" were "irresponsible".

"We strongly condemn the callous and irresponsible comments made by self-styled ULFA military chief Paresh Barua and his threats to journalists and intellectuals of the state who dare to oppose the diktat of the banned outfit," the Forum said in a statement sunday.

"ULFA leaders not only impose ban on celebration of national days but also issue threats to people who oppose them with dire consequences. But such threats have not reduced the patriotism of people in the region."

Barua had on Wednesday threatened those who oppose or criticize the outfit's policies and demands with dire consequences and asked his cadres to target security forces.
