Mooshahary for Better NE-South Asia Ties

Guwahati, Jan 13 : Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary today appealed to the NE diaspora to turn the region into a garden of gold, referring to the famous dictum of Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom dynasty. Sukapha, after entering the NE region about 900 years back, found this land to be a garden of gold, he said.

He was addressing the valedictory function of the two-day NE Indian International Meet (NEIIM), 2010 organised by the voluntary organisation Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters (FASS) at the Machkhowa ITA Centre for Performing Arts here.

In this connection he referred to the Malayali and Nepali diaspora. The Malayali diaspora have been making significant contribution to their state’s economy.

Though the Nepali diaspora used to contribute significantly to their country’s economy, at present due to some problems, they are not in a position to make such contributions, he said.

Saying that happiness comes with the increased gross domestic product (GDP), Mooshahary said that the region needs a change in its policies to benefit the grassroot level people. Contradicting the common belief that the people of the region are lethargic, he said that this is rather an anti-thesis of the reality.

People of the region have proved their worth in highly competitive environments elsewhere.

The biggest enemy of the people of the region are those public servants who are involved in misappropriation of the public money meant for development, he said while listing the hurdles in the region’s way to progress.

He also described peace as the faith in future, a confidence in one’s own self to create something for bringing about a change and maintained that conflict is not a hallmark of the NE region. The entire human society is prone to conflict, he said.

Reminding the gathering of the meet that the Look East Policy of the Government of India has made the NE region the gateway the country for reaching out to South Asian countries, the Meghalaya Governor laid emphasis on improving relations with the neighbouring countries.

In this context, he said that the education and agro-industry sectors of the region need some special initiatives for their development.

Addressing the session, FASS chairman and managing director (CMD) Rajen Barua said that the region needs something more than investment.

Moreover, many of the members of the NE diaspora are professionals. Therefore, it would be wrong to expect them, turn into investors. But the FASS is of the belief that if the non-resident and resident sections of its population work together, the region could achieve a lot.

The non-resident section of the NE people can contribute to the development of the region with their knowledge and expertise, said the FASS CMD.

He said that with such objects in view the NEIIM-2010 was organised. Two important technical sessions on flood and erosion and petroleum industry of the region were organised as part of the meet, besides other sessions for some other areas like economy, rural, youth and tourism development etc.
