Dr Sangliana Takes Notes of Minorities' Woes In Manipur

Dr HT Sangliana Imphal, Feb 6 : Capitalizing on the visit of National Commission for Minorities Vice-Chairman Dr HT Sangliana, representatives of Meitei Christians, Muslims and Buddhists apprised the Vice-Chairman about their varied difficulties and problems in addition to submitting a number of memoranda.

Dr HT Sangliana arrived at Imphal today on a five-day visit to the State.

After perusing the memorandums during the interaction programme held at State Guest House, the Vice-Chairman assured that he would look into the points of the memorandums and see which of them can be put into action.

He said that National Commission for Minorities received reports in 2009 and previous years about acts of vandalism targeting churches in Manipur, assault on pastors, exhuming bodies of Christian converts and cremation in accordance to Hindu customs.

Taking serious note of these incidents, the Commission asked the Government of Manipur twice through the Chief Secretary to give detail reports of these incidents but there has been no response till date.

Sangliana said that he would talk with the DGP and other top officials and make spot assessment of the vandalized churches.

He said that he would also call on the Governor and discuss problems of minorities in Manipur.

Interacting with the minority leaders, the Vice-Chairman said that notwithstanding differences in caste or community no one should think themselves as second class or third class citizens.

"We should know that we are citizens of India and that it is our duty to work for the country's welfare", he exhorted.

When there is harmony among different communities of Manipur, on then peace and development can become a reality, he said.

He emphasised on the crucial importance of maintaining cordial relationship among majority and minority communities.

Among others, the interaction programme was attended by Chairman of Manipur State Minorities Commission MA Helim Choudhury.
