Malaria Remains Mizoram’s Biggest Killer Disease

malaria Aizawl, Feb 1 : Malaria, which claimed 119 lives in Mizoram during last year, remains the biggest killer disease in the North-east state.

According to the Health Department records, 1,71,793 people hot their blood tested and 9,399 had tested positive for malaria during 2009. The victims aged between 1 to 64, of which 40 were females.

The health officials have blamed delayed treatment as the major cause of malarial deaths. ''In most of cases, the patients ignored the symptoms at early stages when they came for treatment, it was usually too late,'' the health officials said.

There are 1,283 numbers of DDCs and 200 FTDs in the state covering each and every village of the state.

Funds received from the Centre for malaria control under the National Vector-Borne Disease Control Program was Rs 210.68 lakh and Rs 282.35 lakh in 2007-08 and 2008-09 respectively.

The entire state has been declared as High Risk Area for Malaria since 1996 as per the guidelines under Malaria Action Plan 1995.
