Danish Citizen Held For Peddling Drugs in Assam

Heroin Jorhat, Mar 10  : A Danish national was arrested Wednesday in Assam's Jorhat town on charges of drug trafficking, police said.

A police spokesperson said a middle-aged Danish national, who identified himself as Mortin, was arrested from Jorhat, 310 km east of Assam's main city of Guwahati, after locals informed the authorities that a foreign national was selling heroin and was high on drugs.

'Based on information from locals that a foreigner was selling drugs, we raided a house and found a national from Denmark high on drugs. We also found several pouches of drugs from his pocket,' a police official said.

The arrested man claimed he was building a resort in adjoining Majuli, South Asia's biggest river island.

'He is denying his involvement, but one thing is for sure we found at least two more local boys who were high on drugs along with him,' the official said.

The authorities have informed the Danish embassy in New Delhi about the arrest.

'We have sent the seized drugs for laboratory tests,' the official said.
