World Cup Fever Grips Soccer Fans in Northeast India

meghalaya Shillong, Jun 16 : A giant screen projector has been set up in Shillong City to give the soccer fans a feel of the action of the World Cup soccer games.

People from different areas gathered at an open field to cheer and support their favorite countries.

[S. Lymdem, World Cup Fan]:

"The World Cup is a little bigger... like you see the Indian Premier League... the people of Shillong go to see every game... so the World Cup, you see, is a universal game and people of Shillong love the game, that's why we are seeing the game."

TV showrooms in the city are now flooded by soccer fans.

[Remington Lyngdoh, World Cup Fan]:

"We have a big screen...that's why from our side, from our people, from our state...we put a big screen...we are a big fan of football, especially in the World Cup. This is a special World Cup for South Africa."

Soccer is slowly taking off in India and the World Cup is set to give the game a boost in the country.

India has never come close to qualifying for the World Cup, but that does not seem to have dampened fans' enthusiasm for the month-long tournament.

The event will see 32 countries fighting it out for the title of world champions.
