European Countries Pledge to Invest in Meghalaya

investment Shillong, Jul 10 : Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has said potential investors from UK, Germany and Netherlands have expressed willingness to invest in Meghalaya.

Sangma, together with a six-member team consisting of Cabinet colleagues and officials, had met potential investors from UK, Germany and Netherlands during the ten-day tour that began on June 22.

He said wide ranging discussions were held with potential investors in the field of medicine, tourism, horticulture and sports.

One of the prospects that Meghalaya was exploring is a tie-up with renowned Cancer institutes like Parkside Oncology Clinic and London Clinic in the UK with local hospitals here.

Sangma said that initial discussions were held with officials of these hospitals and they were keen on collaborating with the hospitals here.

“Discussions were held with the management of these hospitals to tie-up with the Government of Meghalaya to provide fellowship programmes for doctors and specialised training for nurses on Cancer treatment,” Sangma said.

He added that expertise was also being sought from such hospitals to build a state-of-the-art new Cancer wing at the Shillong Civil Hospital.

During the visit, Sangma and his Cabinet team also visited Anthura, the world’s second largest producer of Anthurium plant. Initial discussions were held with officials at the Training and Consultancy institute at Barneveld to provide training programmes for farmers and officials from the State.

“We want to make the agro-sector an attractive option for the local youth, so that it can provide avenues for self-employment,” he said.

Apart from medicine and horticulture, the team also held discussions with investors to boost the tourism and sports sectors.

The team held meeting with British Minister for International Development and Equalities for Women Sandip Verma and other prominent Indians in the House of Lords, London.

The Meghalaya delegation also met the Indian High Commissioner to Britain Nalin Suri and urged him to project Meghalaya as an exciting tourist destination in its magazines and publications like “India Digest” and “India News.”

“The outcome of the meetings was very fruitful and we have to now decide how to take forward these ideas,” Sangma said.
