New Delhi, Sep 23 : Showcasing Northeast India as an attractive investment destination and engaging young overseas Indians in the country's development will be among the main themes of next Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, an annual congregation of diaspora community, to be held here from January seven.
The three-day high-profile annual convention will be addressed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on January eight and President Pratibha Patil will deliver the valedictory address and confer the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards the next day.
The ninth edition of the flagship event of Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs will also provide the diaspora community an opportunity to interact with Union Ministers including Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister P Chidambaram and Road Transport Minister Kamal Nath.
Although the three-day event will begin on January 7, it will formally be inaugurated on January 8 by the Prime Minister.
Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi said the Northeastern states will be the partner states of the event and government will showcase investment opportunities in the region to the diaspora community.
"We have not been able to showcase the Northeastern states of India the way we wanted. In PBD we will try our best to showcase the region as a potential investment destination," he said addressing a press conference.
The congregation will also have a plenary session on "Engaging young overseas Indians", besides two other session on education and health care services.
"The proposed legislation on entry of Foreign Education providers bill will open up new avenues for deeper engagement with diaspora. Overseas Indians have also excelled in health care sector.
So we have decided to focus more on engaging the diaspora in these two areas," Secretary in Ministry of Overseas Indians A Didar Singh said.
