monorailAizawl, Mar 10 : Aizawl aspires to become the first city in the Northeast India to have a monorail. According to official sources, the state government has mulled setting up a monorail in the hill city to ease increasing traffic jams with an investment from the Global Investment Capital.

The sources said the monorail project will be executed under Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis and an agreement to this effect would be signed on March 11.

The GIC, which has bases in Dubai and Singapore, the sources said, has shown interest in investing in Mizoram considering its peaceful environment.

Representatives of GIC who met Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla at his office, praised Mizoram for emerging as a role model for peace in the insurgency-disturbed Northeast India.

The GIC team leader Bunny Khin underlined that peace is prerequisite for development and lauded the role of Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla for ushering in permanent peace in Mizoram by surrendering his chief ministerial throne in 1986. He said Mizoram is known for its peaceful environment which may be used to attract global investors.

Expressing his eagerness to partner with the GIC, Lal Thanhawla said besides monorail, housing project for about 500 families of government employees and construction of four-star and five-star hotels would be given first priority under the joint venture with GIC.
