Bangalore, Mar 10 : A growing trend has emerged showing that men insecure over organ size are opting to go in for penile implants.
Nine men in the last three months have gone under the knife to have their penis enlarged in a bid to boost their ego. Statistics have shown that mostly young fathers, aged between 30 and 40, have ended up on the surgeon's table.
Kamini Rao, a noted infertility expert, said, "The last few years I would see just one patient in a whole year. But now I see one every three months. And it's not very surprising that it's now emerging as a trend."
She added, "It's an ego massage for men who are already fathers and they all say that it's because they are ridiculed by their wives or sex partner."
Padmini Prasad of the Institute of Sexual Medicine, attributes the rise in takers to lifestyle disease like diabetes that often causes erectile dysfunction. She said, "Many men just want to have an active sexual life and there's growing awareness, which has caused this increase.
Even men in their 50s have come forward for the procedure."
Prasad, who earlier saw just one patient a year, is seeing a 15 per cent increase in the number of men approaching her in the last few years.
Saheb Gowda Shetty, head of plastic surgery at Fortis Hospital, said, "There has definitely been a surge in the number of men wanting the procedure.
I see about 2 to 3 men ranging between 20 to 30 years-of-age who say that they just want better satisfaction."
He added, "Often it's not about the length, but also the girth of the penis that bothers them."
How it's done
Surgery takes just two hours and involves implanting a pump in the groin or scrotum, which can be manipulated by hand to fill the cylinders from an implanted reservoir in order to achieve an erection.
The replacement cylinders are normally sized to be direct replacements, but larger ones can be implanted.
The advantage of this procedure is that an erection can be created whenever desired, for as long as is desired and as firm as desired. However, this procedure is not reversible.
