Concert to raise funds for the North East students living in Delhi

New Delhi, Apr 28 : Participation of youngsters, especially students of Delhi University (DU), in support of Anna Hazare, has shown that students here, are ready to do their bit for a better India. And not just by lending support, special events are being held for a cause. Here are events organised by the cause-crazy DU
Rock ‘n’ roll for charity
To raise funds for the North East Indians living in Delhi, a campaign for equality concert, called Voice of North-East India was held last week in the Capital and saw performances by five bands from North East India along with the popular band Parikrama.
“Such events are needed to sensitise the youth towards causes that need their attention and participation.
We also have a signature campaign. As soon as we gather three lakh signatures, we would send it to the Prime Minister of India,” says John Maram, one of the organisers of the event. Among the bands that performed at the concert were Blue Clover Band (Nagaland), Frisky Pints (Mizoram), The Vinyl Records (Arunachal Pradesh) and Rampazze(Assam).
“Performing for a cause is a proud thing. I hope our performance was able to raise some funds for the people of the North-East,” says Mithi Tatak, drummer, The Vinyl Records.
The concert saw students cheering for the bands, as some went topless in excitement. “As soon as we got to know about the event, my friends and I came here to cheer,” says Manav Bora, a student of the Hindu College.
Running for a better India
Delhi University Student’s Union (DUSU) had recently organised the HT Edge Delhi University Marathon to take a stand against corruption. “Our objective was to show that students are aware of corruption,” said Neetu Dabbas, secretary of DUSU. The marathon saw many take part in the races.
Flash mobs
The concept of a flash mob is not new to the varsity. To fight corruption, DUSU organised a flash mob in January in Connaught Place. Students from various dance societies of DU colleges participated in the event to grab the attention of the public.
DU bodies for a cause
AISEC-The Delhi University chapter
of Association Internationale d'Etudiants en Sciences Economiques et Commerciales (AIESEC) — the largest student run organisation in the world, organises cultural exchange that aims at gaining first-hand experience in understanding of social problems.
Issues like breast cancer awareness among many others are dealt with at this forum. Cultural programmes and talks are held here. Students even get international internships with Non Governmental Organisations.

A permanent feature of the Delhi University curriculum, under the National Service Scheme, students have to complete certain compulsory hours of working with a cause to get the certificate. The causes include helping underprivileged children, the HIV positive and physically challenged people among many others.
