Militants Target Education Sector in Manipur

Manipur-MilitantImphal, Apr 13 : After targeting employees in the insurance, banking and hospitality sectors, militants in Manipur are now reportedly targeting students, teachers, principals and professors for extortion and ransom.

These attacks pose a threat to the education state's system and is being viewed with serious concern.

Oinam Imocha, a resident of Langthabal Kunja Awang Leikai in Imphal is scared after suspected cadres of Government of People's Republic of Nagalim left a hand grenade outside the veranda of his house on March 31.

Though the grenade was removed, the fear in the mind of the 30-year-old Computer professor remains.

"It is very painful to see all this. I have not done anything wrong so I wanted to discuss what did they want from me? But when I found the grenade, I was scared and decided to concern with people and local authorities," Oinam said.

"On March 12, one unidentified youth came to the house and handed over a demand note for Rs 3 lakh in the name of GPRN saying that it was an invitation card. Along with the demand note there was one bullet and a mobile phone number inside the envelope" said Indira Devi, Imocha's wife.

"We do not want this kind of thing to happen again. It can kill us. We have come out together to strongly protest against it," said Dashumati Devi, a protestor.

"If the authorities do not take the incident seriously then we will intensify our agitation. We will hunt them down and then take appropriate action against them," added Randhoni Devi another protestor.
