Itanagar, Apr 26 : The XXV North East Games 2010-11 kick-started here at Lopon stadium, Dirang today with fanfare.
State Education Minister Bosiram Siram has declared the North East Games open.
In the opening ceremony, the Education minister called upon the participants to maintain the sportsman spirit while playing.
He said the players should take inspiration from Baichung Bhutia, Rennedy Singha and others and excel in the games and sports activities to represent the state in the national and international arena.
Earlier, Siram ceremonially hoisted the games flag and took oath from the sportspersons.
National record holder in 62 kg and Commonwealth Gold medalist weightlifter Yukar Sibi lighted the Olympic torch.
Around 1,240 athletes from all the seven NE states and Sikkim are taking part in the games.
Manipur had fielded the largest number of players with 205 while 181 players are participating from host Arunachal Pradesh.
MLAs Wangki Lowang, Phurpa Tsering, Kumsi Sidisow, Sports and Youth Affairs Secretary DS Pandit and SAI director were the other dignitaries present in the occasion.
A colourful cultural show and fireworks added colour to the opening ceremony.
The athletes will be competing in eleven disciplines at three venues at Dirang, Bomdila and Rupa during the six-day long competition.
Football, Badminton, Karate, Judo, Taekwondo and Weightlifting are being held at Dirang, Archery, Boxing and Table Tennis at Bomdila while Athletics and Wushu will be held at Rupa.
