Quake Measuring 4.3 on Richter Scale Jolts Mizoram

Aizawl, Apr 20 : Mizoram was rocked by an earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter Scale around 1910 hrs today.

Dr H Lallenmawia, joint director of Mizoram’s geology and mining department quoting the seismological observatory reading here, said the epicenter of the quake was about 10 km north of Kolasib, in northern Mizoram near the Assam border.

No casualty was reported from anywhere in the state.

Geologists said the density of Mizoram soil is very thin, which helped reduce the impact of earthquakes.

'' Earthquake of high intensity for a longer period of time can be extremely disastrous in view of the soil condition and also violation of building norms, especially in the capital Aizawl city,'' Lallenmawia said.

This is the second earthquake which jolted Mizoram this year. An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale jolted Mizoram in February 4.

Residents in Aizawl felt that this evenings quake was more massive than the previous ones. This, according to Dr Lallenmawia, was because the epicenter was in Mizoram.

Mizoram falls under earthquake intensity zone V, the most vulnerable earthquake zone.
