Two Mizoram Kids Get Jeevan Raksha Medals

jeevan-raksha-padakAizawl, Apr 14 : Two kids from Champhai district, who were among the 53 recipients of the Jeevan Raksha Padak series of awards for 2010 from across the country, were handed over medals by Champhai district deputy commissioner Vijay Kumar Bidhuri on behalf of the President at a ceremony today.

Jeevan Raksha Padak series of awards are given to a person for meritorious act of humane nature for saving the life of a person.

The award is given in three categories-- Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak and Jeevan Raksha Padak.

Zonunsanga, son of Vanlalrenga, of Champhai Rahsi Veng, was selected for the bravery award for risking his own life to save the life of his friend who was drowning in a swimming pool in 2009.

Even though Zonunsanga did not know how to swim, he dived into the pool to save his friends life. Though he managed to drag his friend out of the water, the latter died in the hospital due to suffocation.

The other medalist, Lalrammawia, son of Khualkamlova, of Chawngtlai village in Champhai district, saved the life of his friend from a swamp of bees. As the boys threw stones at a beehive in a tree, the bees started attacking one of them. Lalrammawia then burnt a cloth of sack and dispersed the bees.

The two kids received citation medals and cash award of Rs 30,000 each from the Union Home Minister through the President.
