Bengal, Northeast Shoulder Huge Responsibility in AFC Football Festival

: Bengal and the Northeast have shouldered huge responsibility in India's challenge at the AFC Cup Football festival (South Asian Zone) under-13, slated to start in Iran today.

Whilst eight players were picked up in the Indian squad from Bengal, six players is representing the country from Mizoram while Manipur has four in the 22-member squad.

Iran's Yazd City is hosting the soccer championship in which India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are competing in the meet from May 18 to 28.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) picked the squad after a month-long camp in Chandigarh.

Manager Satheevan Balan said, ''We will divide the squad into two teams so that everyone gets a chance to play.

One team will play the first match while the remaining boys will play the next.'' ''Results do not matter at this stage. It's important to give an opportunity to all to generate interest at this age,'' he added.

The squad: Goalkeepers: Sam Nornoha (Goa); Subrata Das (West Bengal).

Defenders: Fwiden Bargoyary (Assam); Vijay Kumar (Haryana); Shahbaaz, Konjenbham, Maniranjan Singh (both from Manipur); Vanlalruata, Jonathan Lalmuansanga (both from Mizoram); Krishanu Santra, Rabin Mahato, Babu Mondal (all from West Bengal)

Midfielders: Lazimali, Bento Neuton Joe (both from Kerala); Lalthansanga, Lalmuanzova, Lalrintluanga (both from Mizoram); Sandip Bhattacharjee, Rajesh Goswami (West Bengal).

Forwards: Heisham Sailesh Singh (Manipur), Lalremuata, (Mizoram), Firozuddin Molla, Basu Mukherjee (both from West Bengal)

Head Coach: Surinder Singh, Assistant Coach: Tarun Roy, Physio: S Babu.
