  • Delta appears on hit show DWTS
  • Goes from US unknown to 21m viewers
  • Does two songs, duet with Michael Bolton

Delta Goodrem has made her first major inroads into breaking the American market.

Goodrem appeared on last night's American Dancing With the Stars in front of 21 million viewers.

Despite being unknown to most Americans, Goodrem performed two songs on the program – the most watched show on US TV.

Chart topping UK singer Adele pulled out of singing (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman at the 11th hour, citing illness that stopped her hitting her higher register.

With less than an hour to rehearse the song, Goodrem stepped in and received a standing ovation from the crowd for the song made famous by Aretha Franklin.

Twitter was soon abuzz with comments including, "Never heard of Delta Goodrem but after hearing her incredible voice tonight will definitely be checking her out," and, "I'm thinking Delta Goodrem just totally upstaged Adele in every way possible."

Goodrem and Adele (who performed her hit Rolling in the Deep) met backstage, with Goodrem noting, "to be asked to fill in for the beautiful Adele - such an honour and such a pleasure to be on such a much loved show. Can't wait to go back one day and perform my own song."

Goodrem also performed her new duet with Michael Bolton, I’m Not Ready, wearing a dress made by Australian designer Lisa Ho.

It was the world’s first peek at what appears to be Goodrem’s comment on her split with fiance Brian McFadden.

Goodrem, who wrote the song, refers to the length of their relationship and her sadness that it ended.

The opening line is, "I am broken, there’s a stranger on the phone, something’s missing from seven years ago," while other lyrics include, "You know it’s okay we didn’t make it forever, " and the chorus, "I’m not ready to say goodbye, you and God both know all the years that I’ve tried."

There’s positivity in the lyrics too with Goodrem singing, "I’m scared of tomorrow and the emptiness to come, but I’ve changed for the better since I’ve known your love."

The bridge lyrics include, "And even if we tried we would end up right back at this place together, this was not a lie and what we had will always be a real love forever."

I’m Not Ready is available on the new Michael Bolton duets album Gems, released in Australia on June 24.

Full lyrics to I'm Not Ready by Delta Goodrem and Michael Bolton:

I am broken
There’s a stranger on the phone
Something's missing,
From seven years ago
You tell me baby don’t you cry anymore
That’s the past and not what we’ve become
But I know
I am shaking
Not a breath left to breathe
All this sadness so cold
That I can’t speak
Look me in the eyes,
You know it’s okay we didn’t make it forever
Come hold my hand,
Hold on to this last minute we have together
Chorus-
I’m not ready
To say goodbye
You and God both know
All the years that I’ve tried
And if it’s over
Give me the strength to go
Cause I know I’m never going to be
I’ll never be ready
To say goodbye, to you

My bags are all packed
Waiting at the door
It's hard to imagine
I won't live here anymore
I’m scared of tomorrow
And the emptiness to come
But I’ve changed for the better
Since I’ve known your love
Look me in the eyes,
You know it’s okay we didn’t make it forever
Come hold my hand,
Hold on to this last minute we have together
Chorus-
And even if we tried
We would end up right back at this place together
This was not a lie
And what we had will always be a real love forever
Chorus-
