Imphal, May 23 : Ruing that electronic communication gadgets have somewhat affected the level of popularity of the state's art and culture and its intrinsic value, speaker I Hemochandra Singh has emphasized the need to create awareness on the issue.
"It is quite unfortunate that even the level of popularity of social ethos, folk culture and traditional theatre has been hit by such invasion of electronic revolution," he said.
Addressing a gathering during the inaugural ceremony of the first state-level festival of contemporary play at the auditorium of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipuri Dance Academy here on Sunday, Hemochandra encouraged Manipuri Ensemble (ME), the organizer of the week-long festival, for promoting theatre movement in the state.
Echoing Hemochandra, state art and culture director K Sobita Devi said organizing such a festival will consistently give a larger platform to theatre enthusiasts to explore their talents across the country and the globe.
She assured of providing moral and financial support to organize such meaningful festivals in future.
Being held under the aegis of the ministry of culture, the festival kicked off with ME`s latest production "Abhigyana Sakuntalam" directed by eminent theatre personality Kshetrimayum Jugindro, popularly known as Kshetri Jugindro.
The rest of the plays lined up for the festival include "Rajarshi Bhaigyachandra" directed by MC Thoiba, "Antigone" (Wareppa Naba), "Bhagabatajukyam" (P Khogendra), "Angangba Kabirei" (L Keshworjit), "Chandalika" ( Ranabir Mangang) and "Mangal Yaodraba Numit (Kshetri Jugindro).
Jugindro (52), also the festival director, got his diploma from the National School of Drama, New Delhi, in 1986. He took four months to teach his artistes to enact "Abhigyana Shakuntalam".
