New Delhi, May 19 : A fund of Rs 6,63,694 raised by voluntary donations from public leaders, individuals, government officials and social organisations from Manipur last month in the aid of Japan's tsunami victims was handed over to the Embassy of Japan here last evening.
The Indo-Japan Friendship Association, Manipur in collaboration with the media partner Poknapham Daily took the responsibility of collecting the fund for Japan earthquake and tsunami victims on April 11.
A delegation of three members of the Association comprising President Nongmaithem Ibomcha Singh, Vice-President Waikhom Bhumeswar Singh and Joint Secretary Irengbam Mangan Singh handed over the amount to Mr Koju Matsubayashi, First Secretary, Embassy of Japan along with the list of 304 donors.
Mr Ibomcha Singh in the meeting told Mr Matsubayashi that Manipuris deeply felt sorrow for the victims. Though it was a small amount collected in a joint effort, it was their sincerest help for friendship, he added.
The First Secretary extended his gratefulness to the people of Manipur for sending contribution towards the relief of the victims of Tohoku district, off the Pacific Ocean where earthquake severely hit Japan on March 11.
