Mizo Students' Union Asks P Chidambaram To Check Infiltration in Mizoram

msuAizawl, May 25 : Mizo Students' Union (MSU) has sent a memorandum to the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram demanding a verification of the Bru refugees, who are being repatriated to Mizoram, to check infiltration of Bangladeshi nationals.

Alleging that the Bru tribals from Bangladesh had been migrating to Mizoram via Tripura since the early 1970s, the MSU, in its memorandum ,sent to the Home Minister on Friday last, stated that there were chances of Bangladeshi nationals infiltrating into Mizoram taking advantage of the repatriation of Bru refugees from Tripura.

"The MSU, NGOs and the people of Mizoram warmly welcome Brus who are true citizens of Mizoram. But illegal migrants from Bangladesh and the neighbouring states cannot be accepted," an MSU member said.

The MSU strongly urged the Home Minister to constitute a verification committee to ascertain the true nationalities of the repatriated Brus and check illegal infiltration of foreigners.

The MSU also urged the Home Minister to amend the existing reservation policy in which only 7.5 per cent is reserved for the schedule tribes and to intervene in the long-standing border dispute between Assam and Mizoram to find amicable solution at the earliest.
