Aizawl, May 24
: Mizoram Environment and Forest Minister H Rohluna today made a clarion call to protect the rich biodiversity and emphasised the need to translate the same into developmental venture.

"Mizoram can earn huge revenue from eco-tourism through its rich biodiversity," said the minister, while addressing a function to mark International Biodiversity Day (IBD) here today.

Anchored on the theme ‘Forest Bio-diversity: Earth’s Living Treasure’, International Biodiversity Day (IBD) 2011 aims to raise public and political awareness on national and international levels on the significance of ecosystems and biodiversity to human life.

Voicing grave concern over the rapid depletion of green forest in Mizoram, the minister, who is also the chairman of Mizoram Biodiversity Board, made a clarion call for environment protection before "it is too late".

"Advanced countries are making judicious and sustainable use of their forest resources.

They earn huge profit from their resources without destroying them," he said and called on experts in Mizoram to use their knowledge in conserving the rich biodiversity, which he described as Mizoram’s treasure.

"The more we have biodiversity-based developments, the more benefited will the poor be," he remarked.

The minister, who released a souvenir of Mizoram biodiversity, said the ‘Mizoram Biodiversity Rules 2010’ would come into effect soon.
