Sudan Condoles Mizo Student's Killing

sudan -ambassadorAizawl, May 9 : Sudan has condoled the death of a 22-year-old Mizo youth who was beaten to death allegedly by three African students of a private university in Punjab during a football match last month.

Sudanese Ambassador to India Khidir Haroun Ahmed conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family of Johnny F Lalhmangaihzuala and the people of Mizoram in response to a letter by state Home Minister R. Lalzirliana on his death, an official statement said in Aizawl on Monday.

Two Sudanese and a Tanzanian student of Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, kicked Lalhmangaihzuala, a B.Tech (Civil) student, to death after he scored a goal against them during an intra-university football match on April 26.

Terming the incident as unfortunate, Ahmed extended his keenness to work with the Mizoram government to overcome the situation in the spirit of forgiveness, reconciliation and human brotherhood, the statement said.

In the condolence letter sent on Friday, Ahmed expressed his readiness to cooperate with authorities to address the issue, including adequate compensation to the bereaved family.

The Mizoram minister had demanded on May 2 the Union Home Ministry for an ex-gratia payment to the next of kin of Lalhmangaihzuala.

Besides, he said the Union Home Ministry should send notices to the Punjab government, Lovely Professional University and the Sudanese Embassy to ensure such incidents do not recur.

While the three African students have been arrested for the killing, nine others are in custody for breach of peace.
