NC Hills Students' Forum Faces 'Extortion' Charge

: Police in Dima Hasao district have registered a case against the North Cachar Hills Indigenous Students' Forum (NCHISF) for allegedly serving " demand notes" to various government departments in the hill district.

"This has been done on the basis of complaints filed by officials of a number of government departments," said a senior police officer on Monday.

NCHISF and some other tribal organizations have been agitating for over a year seeking bifurcation of Dima Hasao district between the the Dimasas and the non-Dimasas.

Sources in Haflong, the headquarters of Dima Hasao district, said a number of departments, including DDK-Haflong, fisheries, PHE, and some other government offices have received letters signed by NCHISF president L Hlima Kevom, in which the tribal organization have demanded amount ranging from Rs 6,000 to Rs 20,000 from each of the offices.

In the "demand letters" NCHISF has described their motives about carrying forward the ongoing agitation for bifurcation of the district and needs of fund for the purpose.
