Hmarkhawlien, Jul 11 : In a press statement released by the Lalthuthlung Hmar, President of Hmar Students’ Association, Barak Valley, Assam on 11 July 2011, the student body strongly condemned the attempted vilification and smear campaign unleashed by several dailies in the backdrop of the unfortunate killing of Babul Rongmei, Chairman, Barak Valley Hill Tribes’ Development Council (BVHTDC).
Three unidentified assailants shot dead Babul Rongmei while he was sitting alone in his drawing room at his Silchar residence around 8 yesterday morning. While one of the assailants was lynched by the public before he could escaped, the other two escaped in their motorbike.
Some daily newspapers in the region reported that the killing of the BVHTDC Chairman Babul Rongmei was a pre-meditated plan so as to shift the blame for the murder of Babul Rongmei on the Hmar tribals. The HSA, Barak Valley stated that the alleged news report is highly objectionable and despicable.
The students’ body also stated that it smells a deep-rooted conspiracy to malign the image of the Hmar people and questioned the dailies that wrongly published the report the source of their baseless reports. Further, the press statement also said that the name of the alleged killer mentioned as Blinkson Hmar is fictitious and fabricated.
“Such communal overtone and attempted smear campaign against the Hmar community is totally uncalled for and hence condemnable”, it added. It also urged those dailies not to publish baseless allegations for the sake of peace and tranquillity among the various ethnic groups in the Barak Valley region.
The student body also urged the Govt of Assam to conduct an impartial inquiry to find out the real culprits behind the dastardly killing of Babul Rongmei.
The students body deeply mourn the demise of Babul Rongmei and offered its heartfelt condolence to his near and dear ones, it added.

The report that this killing was a pre-meditated plan so as to shift the blame for the murder on Rongmai Nagas is highly objectionable and despicable.
The students’ body smells a deep-rooted conspiracy to malign the image of the Hmar people and would like to question these dailies where they received such baseless report. Moreover, the name of the alleged killer mentioned as Blinkson Hmar is fictitious and fabricated. Such communal overtone and attempted smear campaign against the Hmar community is totally uncalled for and hence condemnable.
